M&M Roses Introduces
ROSES FROM ISRAEL.

M & M ROSES  have been growing roses in the Negev desert of Israel for nearly 30 Years!
Moshav Sde Nitzan was established 30 years ago in the southwest corner of Israel, near the Gaza Strip and the Egyptian border. It was originally established to attract English speaking immigrants to settle the Negev. Among those were Myron, a plant pathologist, who came to Israel from Chicago in the 60's, and Miriam, with a degree in sociology and psychology, who hails from Melbourne, Australia.
The inspiration for the moshav came from Eddie Peretz, the grand nephew of the Yiddish author, Y.L. Peretz. After the Six Day War Peretz discovered his dormant Jewish identity and decided to do what he could for Israel. He had been growing tomatoes all his adult life and came to the Jewish Agency and Ministry of Agriculture with his idea. His dream was to grow tomatoes for export to England. The Jewish Agency had a dream of attracting educated western immigrants to settle in the Negev utilizing limited land and water resources while exploiting the natural climatic advantages of the Negev. These two dreams meshed into what became Moshav Sde Nitzan. Originally, 27 English speaking families (from America, Canada, England, New Zealand, South Africa, and Australia) settled on a barren site in the Negev. Most of these families came to Sde Nitzan to fulfill their Zionist dreams and participate in a new and unique settlement experience. With the support of the Jewish Agency, greenhouses were imported from Holland and the greenhouse industry in Israel was given a major push forward. The population of the moshav has grown from 27 to 74 families. However, the position of agriculture in Israel, and in the moshav, has steadily declined over the years, leading to economic hardships. Many of the original members have left the moshav. Others have abandoned agriculture as a significant source of their livelihood. Flower growing has replaced the tomato industry.
Most of the new members knew nothing about agriculture, but they each had at least one university degree. Some held PhD’s in physics, English literature, or political science. There were pharmacists, accountants, speech therapists, and a lawyer or two. Many of the original "Anglo – Saxon" settlers gave up after a few years. Some left the moshav and settled elsewhere in Israel, and some returned to their countries of origin. Of the 74 families now living in Sde Nitzan, there are 13 of the original “Anglo-Saxon” pioneer families still living on the moshav.
Severe competition from African and South American flower growers has resulted in a long period of shrinking profits for Israeli flower growers. Myron and Miriam's attempt to use internet based marketing to increase profits is one of their ways of trying to survive in a difficult business.
Myron and Miriam have been growing roses and exporting them to Holland for nearly 30 years. The roses are sold at the famous Dutch flower auctions. About four years ago they began to deliver fresh cut roses, directly from their greenhouses in the Negev, to any address in the USA. At the present time, this unique door to door service is available in the United States only.
The roses are picked and packed in Moshav Sde Nitzan, then shipped to New York by Agrexco, the Israel Agricultural Export Co. The flowers are then delivered by FedEx directly to the customer’s door. The roses arrive in excellent condition and have been used by synagogues and individuals all over the United States, as well as for community fund raising activities. Identification with Israel and pride in using “blue and white” products at individual and community functions has been a significant motive for people ordering flowers from Israel. In these days of strife there are great numbers of people, who are seeking a way to support Israeli businesses and identify with Israel. Purchasing “Roses from Israel” is a beautiful way to do this.
Surprisingly, it is no more expensive to order flowers in this way. In fact these imported flowers from Israel are less expensive than flowers bought “on the web” and often cost less than locally bought flowers, due to the fact that Myron and Miriam have cut out the assistance, and cost, of any middlemen.
Even though the flowers can only be delivered to the United States, anyone, anywhere in the world, can order these flowers from Israel, to be sent to friends or relatives in the States
Numerous groups, synagogues, Jewish Day Schools, JCC’s, USY groups, Chabad, Na’amat, Hadassah, and others have ordered “Roses From Israel” for distribution and also for fundraising.
